The Story

Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. has expressed his support in New Jersey’s bid to overturn a federal law that blocks most states from authorizing sports betting.

Pallone brings the fight against the federal ban in the US Supreme Court.

The Democrat representative filed a brief with the US Supreme Court to defend New Jersey’s plea to legalize sports betting. He said that the federal ban was in violation of the 10th Amendment’s grant of powers to the states.

The lawmaker isn’t the only party that backed Jersey’s bid.

In its amicus brief, The American Gaming Association (AGA) said that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) “prevents States and tribal sovereign government states from repealing or amending laws that their citizens no longer support.”

The AGA said that the PASPA has forced bettors to go underground.

The AGA argued that the federal ban has had “the perverse effect of pushing an enormous market underground by way of federal decree while stamping out state and local efforts to adapt their own laws pursuant to their own citizens’ wishes.”

Takeaway

With the unprecedented move of the Supreme Court to hear the arguments of New Jersey in lifting the federal ban against sports betting, more and more allies of the Garden State rise up to repeal the out-of-date and out-of-touch restriction.
