  United, bitcoin will stand

The Story

Dr. Craig Wright has asked the bitcoin community to be united as he advocated for bitcoin scaling.

But first, a recap on Bitcoin’s scaling problem.

Bitcoin currently has a block size limit of 1 MB. However, with bitcoin’s growing user base and increasing number of daily transactions, the current block size limit makes it difficult to support all the transactions happening in the bitcoin network. This resulted to increase in the transaction times and fees.

So what should be done about this scaling problem?

Wright said that bitcoin scaling is needed in order to bring bitcoin to a point where it will exceed all global past transactions. In turn, the bitcoin community should push for innovation, have sustainable operations, and catch the attention of companies. However, he emphasized that scaling should be done on chain.

But there are factions that are pushing for bitcoin scaling off-chain.

Like those from the Bitcoin Core who proposed SegWit. SegWit’s main goal is to send transactions off-chain and onto second layers like the Lightning Network or sidechains. However, it has drawn criticisms for using a 1:4 ratio, and making the system vulnerable to legal problems.

Wright said that bitcoin scaling off-chain would destroy the cryptocurrency.

The Australian inventor and innovator said: “When you add sidechains, when you add other things that take away from the core of the network you steal the security model, you steal the value. When you do this, that’s what destroys bitcoin.”

Takeaway

In order for bitcoin to fully maximize its potential, the bitcoin community should form a united front and make decisions that would benefit every user.
