The Story

Despite double-digit declines in some major table games, casinos in Nevada were able to earn close to $1 billion in July.

It was a stronger performance compared to June but…

The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) reported that statewide casino gaming revenue hit just under $998 million, which is $100,000 more than what the casinos earned in June. However, it is a 1.7% decline from the same month last year.

The casinos were not the only ones that posted revenue gains.

Slot machine revenue did its part to boost July’s numbers by rising 5.1% to $632.1 million. Craps rose by 19% to $40.4 million while the second half of the World Series of Poker scored a 1% bump to $12.4 million.

However, table games and sports book revenue spoiled the fun.

Major table games suffered from double digit declines led by baccarat ($120.9m, -19.6%), blackjack ($100m, -12.2%) and roulette ($32.4m, -14.3%). Meanwhile, total sportsbook revenue crashed by 95.3% to just $524,000—Nevada’s lowest monthly profit since July 2014.

Takeaway

It’s a good thing that the casinos were able to save Nevada’s gaming revenue. With the numbers from the Mayweather-McGregor fight yet to come, it is expected that August’s revenue number could trump July’s numbers and could be one for the record books.
