The Story

Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) is said to be looking to expand into the Philippines.

The GEG is said to team up with Leisure and Resorts World Corp. for the project.

The GEG subsidiary Galaxy Casino plans to have an integrated resort project in a still undisclosed location. The joint venture is said to spend between $300m and $500m to bring the project to fruition.

This was not the first time that GEG planned to set up shop in the Philippines.

According to a Reuters report, sources at the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) said that in 2012, GEG was interested in opening an integrated resort in Manila’s Entertainment City gaming zone. However, the plan failed to materialize.

But this time, GEG’s plan is likely to push through.

GEG could benefit from the fact that its local partner Alfredo Benitez is currently a member of the House of Representatives for the Third District of Negros Occidental. Benitez is also tight with Duterte, who announced this summer that he was keeping a slot on his party’s ticket open for Benitez should he decide to run for a Senate seat in 2019.

Takeaway

With Beijing’s crackdown scaring away many Chinese VIP gamblers and junket operators to seek refuge in Manila, it is only logical for GEG to follow their patrons.
