We don't get a gold star for getting close. This isn't elementary school. It's professional sports. —Derek Fisher |

The Story | |||
A New Jersey lawmaker is asking acting US solicitor general Jeffrey Wall to support their state’s bid against a federal law that prevents most states from authorizing sports betting. |
Jersey is taking one for the team eh. |
That’s right. New Jersey Rep. Rep. Frank Pallone has asked Wall in a 14-page letter to support the state’s challenge against the 25-year-old Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) which prohibits sports betting. However, he recognizes that the Supreme Court will be the final arbiter. |
What role does the US Supreme Court play here exactly? |
New Jersey has previously passed two laws allowing sports betting but these were struck down by the US Third Circuit Court. Last January, the US Supreme Court invited the nation’s acting solicitor general to submit a brief on the PASPA in considering New Jersey’s case. Pallone hopes that the Supreme Court could overturn the Circuit Court’s decision through the help of the solicitor general. |
The ball is on the US Supreme Court then. |
Yup! And if New Jersey becomes successful in its challenge, other states might follow suit in making their own sports betting legislation. So far, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia and Wisconsin — have already thrown their support behind New Jersey. West Virginia, on the other hand, will follow should New Jersey succeed in its plan. |
Takeaway | |||
New Jersey just took its first step in what could be a long battle to legalize sports betting. |
