The Story
Two Chinese nationals working at a Philippines Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) have been arrested in Cebu on suspicion of kidnapping three fellow Chinese nationals. With yet another kidnapping story related to POGOs, legislators are asking questions on whether the taxes earned are sufficient enough reason to overlook these incidents. Senators Richard Gordon and Franklin Drilon questioned members of the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) about the benefits of POGO operations, pointing out that the sector generates a total net inflow of P7 billion ($140 million) which is a “negligible” 0.04% of the Philippines’ total domestic economy. Drilon was also outraged when Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) regulators claimed that offshore gambling was still beneficial to the country. Meanwhile, several senators have demanded a more thorough investigation of the POGO operations, and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has suggested he’d be willing to shut down the operations altogether if the industry’s problems continue.
