Just like that, with a Philladelphia loss, the Wild Card race has a new leader, as the Milwaukee Brewers move into the last spot and now hope to cling to it against several climbing teams. We’ll look at a few of them, and take a peek at Oakland’s climb up the ranks as well, as we take another look at the odds, thanks to Bovada.
Starting with Oakland (-1.5 -130 RL, -189 ML), who visit the White Sox (+1.5 +110 RL, +165 ML) in the afternoon, the division lead is out of reach at 10 games out, but they sit only half a game back from the Rays. They have had two days of rest, and will start Mike Fiers (10-3, 3.46) against Ross Detwiler (1-2, 5.72). That favors Oakland, who have beat up on Detwiler in the past, and are of course very relaxed after their long break. Pick them and the over. (O/U 10.5)
The Mets (+1.5 -160 RL, +105 ML) are hoping to knock the Brewers out of their newly found spot as they face the divsioin leading Nationals (-1.5 +140 RL, -125 ML). Marcus Stroman (6-11, 3.07 ERA) makes his first start for New York after they shocked the world by committing to win this year with his acquisition, and faces Nats ace Stephen Strasburg (14-5, 3.72). Both teams are doing well, but the Nationals aren’t doing nearly as well as the Mets, who are red hot. I like them to get their seventh win straight here, so pick them and the under (O/U 8.0).
Arizona (+1.5 -125 RL, +175 ML) is hoping to make up some ground too as they face the juggernaut Dodgers (-1.5 +105 RL, -205 ML). As much as it would be fun to see Robbie Ray (10-7, 4.03 ERA) pick up a win against LA, Walker Buehler (10-2, 3.22 ERA) is stiff competition. I just don’t know if any team is suited to taking a series away from the Dodgers, but I wouldn’t bet on the Diamondbacks to do it. Pick the Dodgers for everything and the over, and have a nice weekend! (O/U 7.5)
