Most eyes at the 2011 World Series of Poker (WSOP) will have been on yesterday’s grudge matches. We’d have said Phil Ivey but the closest you could get to him would be a picture right here on the tablog. Lost amongst all this is the fact that a young-pretender from shores far away has the chance to wrap up only the third Triple Crown ever.
Jake Cody enters the last four of the WSOP Heads Up Championship with as good a chance as any of those left in the competition to take home a WSOP bracelet. This would add to his feats at EPT Deauville and WPT London last year. It would then mean that he joins a select club who could then call themselves the three musketeers. Standing in his way is the player he will have wished hadn’t come out in the opposing corner.
Gus Hansen is the most experienced of those left in the competition and will be looking to add to his first WSOP that he waited an eternity for until it came last September. That’s not to say that Hansen will underestimate his opponent for a second as Cody can be considered one of the best players around right now.
The other semi final sees the former online mainstay Yevgeniy Timoshenko take on hometown favorite Eric Froehlich who will hope that a feverish backing will see him through. It will be worth following if only to see if Cody can prevail and make it a Triple Crown. In itself that may deflect some attention away from the controversies.
