A large and booming market

In 2019, German consumers spent approximately €9.3bn on sports betting wagers, a 21% increase compared to the previous year.

“Sports betting has reached the center of society in Germany and has become a popular leisure activity,” President of the Deutscher Sportwettenverband Mathias Dahms recently said.

Reform is coming

The prime ministers of Germany’s sixteen federal states will meet on March 5 to approve the new State Treaty on Gambling Regulation. The updated treaty will regulate both online sports betting and online casino games.

The breakthrough news that the German states have reached an agreement in principle on gambling reform created a veritable buzz at the recent ICE trade show, resulting in a packed meeting on the topic of German gambling regulation.

However, as events are moving fast, much more legal and regulatory clarity is expected by the end of next month – just in time for the Gaming in Germany Conference!
