The Story

Despite improved numbers in its revenue and total gambling turnover, the UK bookmaker recorded an eight-figure loss in 2017.

The cause of the loss depends on who you are asking.

Betfred saw its revenue jump by 9.6%, and its earnings increase by 3% in 2017. Total gambling turnover across its divisions also rose by 17.5% to £12.7b.

The company attributed the loss to rising costs and higher gaming duties. On the other hand, the usual anti-gambling suspects in the UK media highlighted the decision of Betfred founder Fred Done to take a £10.2m annual dividend.
