The Story

New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has published the newly approved temporary regulations that will guide sports betting in the state a day before the first legal sports wager is set to be made.

Regulators have 270 days to come up with permanent regulations.

Here are some salient points of the temporary rules issued by the DGE: first, an initial license will cost a minimum of $100k and a retainer fee of $250k must be paid to cover startup costs; second, land-based wagering at Atlantic City casinos will be taxed at 8.5%, while online wagering will face a 13% rate; third, a patron’s maximum allowable wager is pegged at $5m; and fourth, instead of an integrity fee, sportsbook operators are required to “have controls in place to identify unusual betting activity.”
