The Story

The latest draft of the new coalition agreement between the Five Star Movement (M5S) and League parties shows that it still kept two paragraphs that are detrimental to its local operators.

The coalition's proposals seem to be worse than its predecessor.

While the previous Italian government had imposed a 35% reduction in the number of amusement with prizes (AWP) machines and video lottery terminals (VLT), the coalition government is advocating for “the elimination of gambling machines (slot machines, video lottery terminals) and strong limitations on forms of gambling with repeated bets.” To up the ante, the new government also called for “an absolute ban on [gambling] advertising and sponsorships.”

If they will push through with these proposals, they better brace themselves to lose more than €10b—the amount which the gambling industry stuffed into the state coffers last year.
