The Story

A Quebec judge denied the motions made by David Baazov’s camp to stay his charges, allowing prosecutors to pursue this “particularly complex” case.

The judge had a change of heart.

In arguing for the staying of charges, the lawyers of the former Amaya Gaming CEO cited the delay of the prosecution in providing pieces of evidence that are specific to the case of their client. Last December, Provincial court Judge Salvatore Mascia hinted that he might grant the stay request, but said on Monday that “it was very close at home plate but at the end I accept the argument” of Quebec’s securities watchdog that the trial should proceed. The trial, which is expected to call over 50 witnesses, will begin in the coming weeks.
