The Story

Lottoland CEO Nigel Birrell believes that there’s no such thing as bad publicity as Lottoland Australia became the target of a hate campaign waged by local lottery operator Tatts Group, lottery owners, and even politicians.

Birrell just shook off the hate.

In an interview with Olive Press, Birrell said that “myths and untruths” being peddled about Lottoland weren’t negatively impacting its Australian operations. “If anything, all the free publicity is driving more registrations and increased brand recognition.”

So that’s one way of looking at it.

The Lottoland CEO commented on its Australian operations after the company managed to get a financial services license from Gibraltar regulators.

What’s with all the hate against Lottoland down under?

The Tatts Group, along with other lottery retailers, had mounted a “Lottoland’s Gotta Go!” campaign, after Lottoland won its Northern Territory online betting license in January 2016. The lotto retailers, as well as other Australian state governments, alleged that Lottoland is cannibalizing local lottery sales and not paying its share of taxes.

Takeaway

Bad publicity is still publicity! Tatts Group shame campaign only made Lottoland Australia’s brand more famous and appealing in the eyes of the punting public.
