It takes as much mental energy to dream small as to dream big,
so you might as well dream big.

  Uruguay joins the bandwagon

The Story

Uruguay’s government is set to discuss the possibility of drafting a bill that will allow authorities to block the domains of online gambling operators, even if these businesses were registered abroad.

The idea came from a discussion on taxing digital services.

Filing a bill to block online gambling domains in the Latin American country wasn’t in the original agenda. Undersecretary of Economy Pablo Ferreri said that they were originally discussing ways on how to tax Netflix and Spotify.

Uruguay is the latest country to declare war on online gambling sites.

Uruguay joins Colombia and Argentina in fighting online gambling in their countries. Colombia recently have released a blacklist of 325 operators that are not holding local licenses. While in Argentina, the domain of Miljugadas, an online site operating out of Argentina’s Misiones province, was suspended for taking bets from Buenos Aires punters.

There’s also an incident related to online gambling that irked a politician.

The announcement of blocking domains of online gambling operators in Uruguay came after National Party deputy Jorge Gandini slammed the Uruguayan football team for playing a match while wearing shirts emblazoned with the logo of online bookmaker Sportingbet.

Takeaway

The Uruguayan government is stepping up its efforts to implement its long-standing prohibition on online gambling. However, it is also crucial to see the economic and social benefits of legalizing online gambling to the country.
