The Sands brings out the guns

The Story

Casino operator Las Vegas Sands has allotted $1 million for a public relations campaign aimed at opposing a proposal that will allow video gaming terminals (VGT) in Pennsylvania bars and clubs.

Crafty. Let’s have a look at The Sands’ battle plan.

A report said that The Sands gave over $1 million to fund an astroturfing group called Pennsylvanians For Responsible Government (PFRG) that will fight House Bill 1010—a bill which will allow as much as five VGTs in each of the state’s pubs, clubs and other small venues. So far, The Sands’ proxy group has launched 12000pacasinos.com, a website which claims that VGTs will be set up in any venue, including nursing homes. PFRG also aired radio and television ads which said that thousands of casino employees will be out of their jobs because of HB 1010.

This isn’t the Sands first attempt at Astroturfing.

To stave off any idea of legal online gambling, the company created the alarmist http://stopinternetgambling.com.

But is The Sands alone in this “war”?

The Sands is joined by 12 casino operators in Pennsylvania in opposing the proposed VGT rollout. Aside from HB 1010, the casino operators are also against the state’s multiple gaming expansion plans.

The proponent of HB 1010 won’t back down without a fight.

House Bill 1010 sponsor Rep. Mark Mustio has slammed The Sands’ move, saying that the PFRG was “trying to create a boogieman.” The lawmaker added that “if [Sands] can spend $1m for an ad campaign, maybe we should raise their taxes.”

Takeaway

Expect a strong opposition on the VGT rollout in Pennsylvania as casino operators join forces in guarding their interests.
