The Story

A Union Gaming report showed that Hong Kong-listed concessionaires in Macau saw a collective loss of US$4.3b in market cap due to news that low-stakes games have been introduced in Hainan.

But Macau has no reason to worry.

UG analyst Grant Govertsen said that should the low-stakes gaming operators push their luck and start offering cash payouts, they will violate China’s constitution. Govertsen said the Hainan casinos will not affect the gross gaming revenue trends in Macau because “mass is convenience based and Hainan is simply not convenient for virtually all of Macau’s mass customers.” Also, he said there is no comparison between the Hainan gaming options and the casinos in Macau.
