The Story | |||
A former official of the Philippine regulator PAGCOR sued the Asian division of Wynn Resorts for unlawful disclosure of his personal information, supposedly causing damage to his career and his family. |
Interesting. Tell me more about this. |
The ex-PAGCOR official involved is Rogelio Yusi Bangsil Jr. and he accused Wynn Macau of illegally sharing his personal data with a US law firm investigating alleged misconduct involving PAGCOR execs and Japanese gaming mogul Kazuo Okada. |
And then? |
It turns out Bangsil is not a saint as he may want you to believe. According to a report requested by Wynn and was compiled by former FBI director Louis Freeh, Universal Entertainment CEO Okada improperly showered Bangsil, other PAGCOR officials and their family members with MOP 880,000 (US $110,000) worth of hotel stays and other perks at Wynn Macau and casinos in Las Vegas. The reason? Okada wants to win concessions for his Manila casino project. |
But then Wynn gets to be the one sued! That’s rich. |
Well, you have to understand that Macau has strict laws regarding the transfer of personal data to authorities outside of its jurisdiction. Wynn was fined MOP 20,000 in 2011 for violating the Personal Data Protection Act. Bangsil, who stepped down in 2012 due to the allegations, is now "seeking an apology" from Wynn, as well as undisclosed financial damages. |
What happens next? |
The hearing for Bangsil’s case against Wynn is scheduled on June 22. He also claimed that some of the other 17 ex-officials involved in the report are on a "wait and see" mode if they will pursue their own damage claims against the casino operator. |
Takeaway |
Macau casinos should be careful in disclosing personal information, even if they think they are doing it for the right purposes. |
