The 14th Anniversary Sunday Million approaches, and among the many companies to reach out to the world’s current market leader in the world of poker, PokerStars, is one of their… wait, deadly rivals?

Among the responses, which included a Shrek meme from Jaime Staples and a mic drop – standard Twitter fayre – was a further blast of gunfire from new poker brand on the block, GG Poker, who have recently signed up Daniel Negreanu and Felipe Ramos.

GG Poker wished ‘good game’ to both their illustrious opponents, saying, simply, “Not for long folks!”

While many fans were clearly enjoying partypoker handing out a Twitter roast to PokerStars, one who was loyal to ‘Stars, Lars Larske, commented:

“Says the poker site that runs their servers on a Commodore 64. You should be ashamed of even mentioning [yourselves] in the same sentence as PokerStars.”

Never one able to resist a little jibing in a humorous way, partypoker President John Duthie was quick to refute any fears that this antiquated computer was really behind any of partypoker’s server troubles.

While partypoker have had their share of problems running big online events, the recent MILLIONS Online event went ahead and while PokerStars know they have a winner with the ever-popular Sunday Million, it’s good to see a lack of fear from other big brands.

GG Poker are obviously some way from challenging at present, but how refreshing would it be to see a comparatively new poker site come into the market and enjoy the kind of growth that Bryn Kenney himself has enjoyed, the native New Yorker having recently overtaken Justin Bonomo at the top of the all-time money list.

When it comes to throwing down the gauntlet, partypoker have fired shots before, but when they did so, they weren’t coming into the fight with such a successful live tour. Nowadays, partypoker can claim to have the biggest live poker tour on the planet in terms of prizes being awarded, and while tours shouldn’t only be measured in terms of numbers, it’s a good indicator of how confidently they have grown their presence.

Capturing the online share from PokerStars continues to be a dream to both partypoker and GG Poker, but this sort of exchange might not have existed two years ago, so we can only presume from it that there is a measure of confidence from the ‘orange diamond’ that the ‘red spade’ can be blunted. Only time will tell… and maybe the next time two big online events go head-to-head.
