December 2016 – The Racing Post has landed a treble at the 50th annual Horserace Writers & Photographers’ Association Derby Awards in London, with Tom Kerr, Edward Whitaker and Patrick McCann all scooping awards.

Kerr edged out Chris Cook and Greg Wood of The Guardian and freelance Kevin Blake to clinch the Writer of the Year prize, won last year by his Racing Post colleague Alastair Down.

The Post’s Edward Whitaker and Patrick McCann added to the haul, landing the Photographer of the Year and Picture of the Year award respectively.

For Whitaker, it was a seventh title after he previously enjoyed success in 2014, 2012, 2006, 2003 2002 and 1999.

McCann’s award-winning shot captured runners in a hurdle race at Bellewstown, jumping an obstacle with a rainbow arching through the sky above.

The Irish-based photographer landed the same award last year for his incredible shot of Quantitativeeasing being forced out of the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham Festival in March, in which McCann sustained a serious leg fracture only seconds later when the horse collided with him.

Other winners on the night included newly crowned Reporter of the Year Marcus Townend of the Daily Mail and Channel 4’s Nick Luck, who clinched the HWPA’s Broadcaster of the Year award for a seventh time.

Bruce Millington, editor of the Racing Post, said: “We’re extremely pleased for all three of our deserved winners. It takes a huge amount of time, dedication and talent to land a HWPA award and it’s a real pleasure to work with such great professionals.”
