Angelia Ong makes history as Miss Earth 2015

CalvinAyre.com’s former Asia reporter Angelia Ong made history over the weekend after winning the Miss Earth 2015 crown for the Philippines—the country’s second win in a row.

The 25-year-old was crowned at the Marx Halle in Vienna, Austria, on Saturday night, beating more than 80 contestants from around the world. She succeeded 2014 Miss Earth Jamie Herrell, who is also from the Philippines.

During the pageant, Angelia was asked to come up with a slogan for the next decade and half of Miss Earth, to which she answered: “We will, because we can.”

“I want to let everybody know that all things are possible and all things are feasible if we work together,” the new Miss Earth 2015 explained, according to a Rappler video. “We will, because we can.”

It is the first time in 15 years that two Filipinas won back-to-back titles in the beauty contest. Incidentally, this is also the first time Miss Earth has held the coronation in Europe, coinciding with the pageant’s 15th-year celebration this year.

First held in 2001, Miss Earth is among the world’s largest beauty contests.

But before she was Miss Earth 2015, Angelia had already wowed the crowd—of the gambling industry’s movers and shakers, that is—with her wit and charm.

The beauty queen, who graduated with a marketing management degree, joined the CalvinAyre.com team in 2012 as the site’s Asia reporter. Since then, she has covered many industry conferences and poker events in and outside of the Philippines.

Among her notable interviews include that of Inspired Gaming Group’s Harmen Brenninkmeijer, in which they discussed the state of iGaming regulation in Asia. She also discussed the growing interest in the Indian gambling market with India Bet’s George Oborne and BlueSea Gaming’s Albert Climent; and the Asian facing mobile gaming offerings with Webe Gaming President John English.

From us here at CalvinAyre.com, congratulations Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong!
