Giant Killing second nature to the Honest Men

ayr united beat heartsBodog-sponsored Ayr United pulled off their second-cup shock of the season by slaying the mighty Hearts thanks to goalkeeping heroics from Kevin Cuthbert. David was acting up against Golaith for the second Scottish Communities League Cup round in a row as The Honest Men triumphed on penalties to send themselves into the quarter-finals of the cup.

The home side had fallen behind to a Scott Robinson strike early in the second half. With the crowd at Somerset Park behind them they got back into it 14 minutes later thanks to a Garth Wardlaw strike. That sent the game into extra time where the tired legs on show for both sides meant that the game went to a penalty shootout.

Michael Moffat converted the first kick in front of the visiting contingent of fans before Eggert Jonsson leveled for the SPL side. James McKernan kept The Honest Men at 100% before Cuthbert stepped forward. First, the United man saved from Daniel Grainger and, after Alan Trouten had converted for the home side, Rudi Skacel’s effort was also pushed away.

It was down to Mark Roberts to keep the Ayr record at 100% and see them progress to the quarters 4-1 in the shootout.

The draw for the next round takes place at 1pm later today with the ties to be played on Tuesday 25th or Wednesday 26th October. Ahead of that draw for the next round, the big clubs must be thinking to themselves “don’t come a knocking when Somerset is a rrrocking”.
