Leading up to this year’s Ashes series there’s growing optimism around the English side that they can retain the urn and return to the island as victors. The Australians are worried. They really have everything to lose and nothing to gain in this series. Winning will be satisfying but it’s kind of expected on home soil against the “Pommies.” Losing? Well that doesn’t really bear thinking about if you’re an Aussie.
An Australian beer company has heaped even more pressure on the side now though. Carlton, the company that brews Fosters, Corona, Kronenbourg, and others has said it will give every adult in Australia a free beer if the hosts are victorious in the series. Either those guys over at Carlton have had one too many themselves or see this as an easy win. The gesture will bring money over the counter, as people will recognize them as the ones making the good will offer. Then if the team loses, no one will be bagging Carlton.
The vouchers will be printed in five Australian newspapers if the hosts win and will cost them an estimated £12m if it comes to pasture.
