Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters quartered at Wimbledon

Woah there! What’s this? Two shocks in the women’s tennis? Vera Zvonareva and Tsvetana Pironkova are both through to the semi-finals of Wimbledon after knocking out Kim Clijsters and Venus Williams respectively. Zvonareva earned her place in the last four for holding her nerve, which has been the Russian’s weakness in the past, coming from behind to knock out the five-time champion.

As for her semi-final opponent, Pironkova (pictured, far left) is a rare talent. Not only is she Bulgarian but she’s a foxy Bulgarian at that – and that definitely qualifies as rare talent. It’s a particularly welcome relief to those of us still ruing the exit of Daniela Hantuchova and Ana Ivanovic. Read more.
