PokerStars has decided to try and increase its exposure in Spain by signing a one-year sponsorship agreement with the Spanish Basketball Federation. The move comes two months before the 2010 FIBA World Championship, which takes places in Turkey this August, and appears to be a strategic move to raise the company’s profile ahead of the anticipated liberalisation and regulation of the online gaming market in Spain.
Quite how much exposure it expects to get from basketball when football so obviously reigns in Spain remains to be seen. Perhaps PokerStars were drawn to the great care and sensitivity the Spanish basketball players put into their PR when they go abroad. Read more.
