Will 2010 be the year the World Cup finally breaks in U.S.?

It’s one of life’s bigger mysteries — why, with every kid essentially required to play footie from the moment he/she can walk, do Americans show such little interest in the beautiful game as an adult spectator sport? Television execs in the U.S. are betting that this year’s World Cup will change that sorry situation, and ESPN is assembling more staff than even the mighty BBC plans on sending to South Africa. However, as George Patton so sagely pointed out, Americans love a winner, and with the U.S. team not among the favorites to take the trophy, all that wall-to-wall TV coverage may not make a difference.
