In terms of popularity backgammon has long played second fiddle to the global phenomenon that is poker but it is a game that is similar in many ways.

Like poker there is an element of chance involved but strategic thinking is all-important to succeed and the game lends itself perfectly to gambling – as this columnist discovered to his cost when making the mistake of challenging a far cleverer holiday companion to a few games three years ago. Suffice to say, we’ve not been on holiday together since.
