Ayre Head Lisa Morales has been voted into the top 10 of Maxim mag’s Hometown Hotties contest. I tend to agree with Maxim and the voting public on this one. Lisa is one of our most popular Ayre Heads and with good reason. She’s sexy, smart and funny as hell. Her biggest problem is that she’s so damn nice all the time. It makes me feel like an even bigger a-hole than normal.

Greece set to adopt online gambling

After siphoning off billions and billions of Euros from other countries in the Eurozone in the wake of the global price of houmous crashing following the boom years of the noughties, Greece was in a hole.

Couple this with the continual criticism of the country’s night spots, you know the ones where you sit in the sun and then drink until you’re sick. Pretty good, right? – Well apparently not according to the Western media. Now the Mediterranean peninsular seemingly has nowhere left to turn.

When all looked like it was lost, and they might have to look into enlisting the help of a bunch of cockney loan sharks offering rates of 3000% interest, oh no that was just Wonga.com, there was a glint on the shimmering horizon.

That glint was a superhero dressed in the European flag coming to explain to the people of Greece there’s life beyond houmous and feta cheese. Other European countries have been bitten by the online gambling bug, and it’s provided them with tax money to help them out of the global recession – even America’s getting on board.

It’s no surprise then that Greece is finally looking to go into the barely legal, XXX market that is online gambling.

No stranger to the odd Eurotrip, Betfair could be one of the first to operate in a newly regulated market in Greece, which could be finalised as early as May next year.

We caught up with Susannah Gill from Betfair, who commented: “It’s been on the cards for a many months that Greece have been planning to do something regarding the gambling sector, so it’s obviously exciting that things are now moving forward.

“[Betfair] will be submitting a response to the consultation and we will also be undertaking further work with the Greek government to help construct the best proposals for the sector.”

But before Betfair start to think of drink fuelled holidays in Zante, Zakynthos, or any other Greek island, there’s obviously the fact that it’s only draft legislation, and therefore a long way to go until it actually becomes a reality.

She continued: “I think what’s noticeable about the current consultation is how vague some of it is. So it’s clear that they haven’t formed their ideas yet, so we’ll be looking forward to seeing what responses are made to the consultation, and what comes out of it.”

The fact that the consultation is rather vague may be put down to them being both slightly naïve about the whole thing but also not wanting to make a hash of it all, as the tax money they’ll be able to take from it will help their economy out no end. They may even be able to start paying back Germany and the rest of the Eurozone after the disastrous houmous-gate episode of the last year or so.

It’s clear that Greece are going down a slightly similar road to France, where legislation has worked out well for Napoleon and his government, and where companies such as Pokerstars have been left dans la merde, as far as customer relations are concerned.

Betfair wont be making any rash decisions on the market in Greece until the facts are known and the “regulatory landscape is clearer.” This all while Mr Betfair (you know, the guy who gets smashed round the jaw in the adverts) takes part on Who Wants to be a Millionaire and walks away with £1000, and all three lifelines still intact. Not even Chris Tarrant could persuade him to continue.

It may have entered the English dictionary, and be one of the items on every child’s Christmas list, but UEFA don’t like it one bit – and I’m not talking about a resurgence in Tellytubbies and Tamagotchis.

Unfortunately European football’s governing body have taken it upon themselves to ban vuvuzelas from all Champions League, Europa League, and Euro 2012 qualifiers as they would ‘drown supporter emotion.’ Nothing like drowning supporter emotion with people creating more noise. Does that go hand-in-hand with highly exorbitant ticket prices, and prolonged group stages to gain more cash for UEFA’s coffers? Thought not. Read more.

India moves to legalise sports betting

The cat and mouse game between underground betting syndicates and the police, in India, looks set to be a thing of the past as the country looks to take the easy way out and legalise sports betting in their part of the subcontinent. Problems with gambling have existed ever since Baldrick and his pals from the British Raj upped and left, with this pastime left behind, and this comes as neighbours Pakistan are embroiled in a cricket match fixing scandal, which many feel may not have existed had gambling been legalised long ago.

The Indian government have also realised that regulation would mean more money for them, in turn giving them increased cash to spend on sarees and the lucrative take-away market over in the Britain. Read more.

Kevin Pietersen’s latest stab at becoming an Internet sensation is less than surprising, as he announced his omission from the England squad and signing for a new club in an expletive-ridden tweet. This isn’t even the first time KP’s Twitter has been caught with its beak where it shouldn’t be.

NRL game latest to be fixed?

After seeing the global exposure that can be gained from having a scandal take over your sport, especially one to do with betting, Australia’s rugby league competition the NRL are investigating a special exhibition game they put on once a year.

Officials have got police involved after the Western Kangaroo against the Northern Koala game involved a flood of bets being made on which one was the taller of the two, just before the koala slipped on a pair of stilts. The police are now involved and the offending koala is helping with their inquiries. Read more.

Gambling booms in Hong Kong, gambling arrests boom on mainland

‘One country, two systems’ is the official mantra that underscores the stark contrasts between mainland China and the ‘special administrative region’ (SAR) of Hong Kong. For example, in the past 12 months, Hong Kong’s seven million residents spent over $15 billion US on gambling (a 7% increase over the previous 12 months). Keep in mind that this region (unlike that other SAR, Macau) has no casinos. So that $15B was entirely spent on horse races, football matches and lottery tickets.

Meanwhile, back on the mainland, that ‘public security’ campaign launched at the beginning of the year has so far netted some 278,000 ‘criminal cases’, including a substantial number of gambling-related charges centered around World Cup bettors. Scientists at Rice University and Hewlett-Packard are wiping tears of joy from their Coke-bottle glasses after overcoming a huge obstacle blocking the increased miniaturization of computer memory. Previously, scientists had been convinced that the limits of physics would cause the pace of miniaturization to slow (or even halt), which would have put the kibosh on their plans to pack ever more computing power into ever smaller devices. But their big brains came up with a small solution, so it’s onward and er, downward!

Gaming companies take note – this is further evidence that the computer of the future will be something that fits in your pocket, not sits on a desktop. Could cricket scandal wreck public gaming company merger hopes?

It’s official. Public gaming companies are selfish crybabies. It’s hard to believe that with a scandal besmirching the sport of cricket — and simultaneously dealing a dagger-blow to the heart of a nation already struggling under the weight of an unprecedented natural disaster — it’s public gaming companies who are crying ‘woe is us’. Like a teenage girl who gets a big beaming zit on her nose the morning of her junior prom, public gaming companies who were hoping to look their best for prospective dance partners are now lying in a heap on their bedroom floor, sobbing their eyes out.

Take the case of 888.com, last seen bleeding money and shedding staff like so many unwanted pounds in an effort to fit into the prom dress it bought earlier this year. 888 knows that the merger mania gripping the industry is almost entirely predicated on the prospect of legal online gaming coming to the US market in the not too distant future. Anything that might cause the moral watchdogs of the American right to point the finger of scorn at online gaming – like, say, a highly publicized sports corruption story – might set those prospects back a good long while, if not indefinitely.
