Facebook TimelineAfter months of anticipation and hype, Facebook finally announced today that its Timeline feature is up and running on the site and ready for those who want to use it.

Announced back in September, the feature exchanges your profile page for a scrapbook-style listing of your history on Facebook, telling your life story in a collection of photos, status updates, friend requests…pretty much everything you’ve ever put on there – but in order.

It might sound a bit creepy and stalkerish as now not only can you find out what your friends have been doing the past few days, but what they’ve ever done in the past few years. One million people are apparently already using it. Most of which are those in New Zealand who were offered a test run in Autumn.

Those who are genuinely terrified of their newer friends finding out what they got up to over two years ago – for instance being in seven different relationships within one week – don’t need to worry.  The new feature gives you seven days to tweak any details from your shady past you want to hide before it goes live.

With Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently getting in trouble with the FTC over privacy issues, let’s hope the new feature ensures the company doesn’t make any similar mistakes. Nevertheless, there’s always going to be some people that just don’t like any changes Facebook brings, no matter how groung breaking.

Love it or hate it, get ready for the endless streams of moany status updates complaining about it. “I hate the new Facebook”, “What’s this rubbish” etc.

Will you be getting yourself involved in a bit of virtual nostalgia? If you’re still unsure, have a peek at the video below with an overly smiley lady called Kate, explaining Timeline and the 7-day preview process:
