ios5 Apple released an update to its iOS 5 operating system yesterday – the iOS 5.0.1 – with the intention to fix a few bugs. One problem in particular was the iPhone 4S’s dwindling battery power and poor performance, which many users have been complaining of since its release. Much to the dismay of disgruntled customers facing the issue – reports have come in today that the update has made the iPhone’s performance life even worse. And those who weren’t having problems before the update, are now.

In a report by tech news site BGR, one user said on the Apple support forum: “After upgrading to 5.0.1 my iPhone is draining the battery even faster,” alongside many other users who agreed and said that instead of improving their battery life, iOS 5.0.1 has actually exacerbated the issue.

With many criticisms leading up to the update release, Apple had been testing the solution for some time, even reaching out to affected end-users and having them install the potential fix to test its effectiveness. Something Apple never usually does…so perhaps Apple realised what a terrible mistake it had made?

Nevertheless, all that testing can’t have worked. One only needs to scan the pages of threads on Apple’s support website and on other forums around the web to see the lists of complaints, with some users claiming to lose as much as 50% of a charge in two hours or less. Daymn.

Something that also doesn’t help Apple is that it hasn’t yet publicly addressed users’ complaints – which much only leave customers feeling powerless…literally.

However, the Apple iOS 5 update does bring multi-touch gestures to the first generation iPads as well as resolving a number of bugs – just not the one to keep your igaming alive. Looks like Apple has been putting too much elbow grease into patent lawsuits and injunctions as of late.

Do you have an iPhone? If so, have you experienced any similar problems? How is it affecting your online gaming experience? With other gadget giants taking a lead in the smartphone market, carrying the good old Apple rival, the Android platform – could this battery problem be one hit too many for the iPhone?
