"BOOM" HTC boss Peter Chou unveils the Rezound.

The Taiwanese gadget giant, HTC, last night unveiled its brand spanking new smartphone – the HTC Rezound. And spanking is something we’re sure it will do – as the newest addition to HTC’s long line of Android powered mobile devices, all bets are on that this little baby will give the iPhone 4S a run for its…err dwindling battery power?

As HTC’s new flagship, top notch, crème de la crème Android handset, it was only right that it was revealed at a very swish event in New York. And yes, we mean swish, so much so that even the doctor himself, Beats Audio co-creator Dr Dre, was there to witness the big reveal of the glossy red and black smartphone. With that, we’re sure you’ve guessed the Rezound will be yet another HTC handset to come bundled with booming Beats audio power (something the iPhone doesn’t have).

But that’s not all, oh no. At the event, the CEO of HTC, Peter Chou, made an announcement that the Rezound will be Ice Cream Sandwich-ready when shipped. Meaning it’ll be only the second phone after Google’s impending Galaxy Nexus release to take advantage of the newest Android operating system. That’s if Apple don’t have a tantrum and throw a patent lawsuit in the works. Wahhh!

With what we’re sure is keeping Apple trembling in its fruit bowl, here are the specifications of the almighty HTC Rezound:

  • 1.5 gigahertz dual-core CPU
  • 1 gigabyte of RAM
  • LTE 4G support
  • HTC’s first 720p (1280 by 720) HD resolution display on a 4.3-inch screen
  • 8-megapixel camera with a f2.2 lens – similar in performance to that of an iPhone 4S
  • 1080p HD video recording with editing features

Sounds like the bundle of dreams. But it’s the integrated Beats software and bundled earphones that we think will earn HTC some serious street cred.

At the unveiling, Chou said the company began working with Beats Audio earlier this year to revolutionise mobile audio. And that’s exactly what they seem to be doing. With Beats Audio, the company says the sound on the phone is tuned specifically to make music booming marvellous. We’d like to think so too, considering its investment of a whopping $300 million in Beats Electronics back in September.

With all that bass, we’re not too sure how well the Rezound’s battery life will hold up, but it can’t take much to beat the 4S in that respect.

The HTC Rezound will be available in the states on Verizon Wireless on 14 November for around $300 online. It does sound like a true iPhone contender spec wise, but as far as a UK release date goes – nothing has been mentioned…just yet. The UK will be waiting with baited breath over the possibility of this beasty beat-booming baby. The UK might already have the HTC Sensation XE and XL, but unless HTC commit to offering the Rezound to all countries, it’s never going to live up to the Apple global presence as the leading smartphone manufacturer. Do you see yourself getting involved with a bit of Rezound?
