android-worldThe total number of people using Google’s mobile operating system Android has topped the 190 million mark worldwide. Google CEO Larry Page announced the figures today in the company’s third-quarter earnings call.

To put that in perspective for you, 190 million is roughly the same amount as the population of Japan and the UK put together. Get your head around that one. It’s not too hard to believe if you consider how the company said in July it was activating 550,000 Android devices a day. That must have increased even further by now.

In Google’s announcement, Page also said that the company hold a $2.5 billion mobile revenue run rate. For those oblivious to what that means – and come on, it’s many of us – it refers to Google’s expected mobile revenue over the next year based on its performance this quarter. What’s more, that’s $1 billion better than the year before.

Page said the company felt comfortable telling the world its mobile revenue run rate because there is a confluence of many things growing in mobile. He said: “We thought it was appropriate to round it [mobile revenue] up with a snapshot of where we stand.”

Come off it Larry, you just wanted to show off. But who can blame him?

Google must be over the moon about the news, which comes at a time when their Google+ social networking site is losing users only months after its launch. Nevertheless, someone in the mobile industry needs to give Apple a run for its money, while it sows the land with its innovative seeds through the launch of its mobile operating system update iOS5 and iPhone 4S.

The impressive thing about this though is that Google doesn’t make any money when Android manufacturers, such as HTC and Samsung, use its software in their phones. Instead, the company reap the advertising benefits of having millions upon millions of users on its own platform.

The growing Android community means good news for game developers too. With its open source code platform, it allows a more creative and flexible workbench for developers to make their innovative ideas come to life. Just like magic!

For this reason alone,  we think Android is the best mobile operating system. Do you agree?
