Aww, how heart-warming. But maybe Samsung shouldn’t be too considerate as Apple’s newest smartphone – the shiny new iPhone 4S – is breaking records even before it goes on sale to the public, with first-day pre-orders topping the one million mark.

Apple says this year’s first day pre-orders total broke records set by the previous model, the iPhone 4. When that was launched in June last year, sales reached 600,000 – almost half the amount of the 4S. Apple started taking orders for the new model on Friday alongside numerous network providers, a week before we’re set to get our dirty mitts on it when it hits the stores on October 14.

The new version looks identical in every way to the last. Inside it’s a completely different story. Think of it like every blonde hooker you’ve ever met. It boasts a dual-core processor, improved HD camera and state of the art voice recognition technology called Siri, a built-in electronic slave that responds to your every demand. But whether the antenna will work better this time is yet to be tested.

The 4S costs around $200 on one of those never-ending two-year contracts. If you crave the freedom of a sim-free device you can be expected to folk out about four times this much.

News hasn’t been so good for RIM – manufacturer of iPhone rival BlackBerry – whose services collapsed across the world today.

A glitch affecting online services for customers all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa hit at 11am GMT, making it impossible to browse the web, instant message or email.

Many disgruntled Blackberry customers had no idea what had happened to their phones – including RIM, whose spokesman was apparently unavailable for immediate comment (he couldn’t access his emails).

However, The Telegraph reported that on one of its official Twitter feeds, T-Mobile UK gave a worthy insight. It read, “There is an issue with Blackberry services at present.” Cheers for that, T-Mobile. At the time of posting this article, the problem still hadn’t been fixed, with customers screaming out for their beloved BBM service. Sort it out RIM, before you lose even more customers to dear old Granny Smith.
