Sales of certain tablet devices are set to rocket by as much as 134% in the coming year. According to reports coming out of Taiwan, analysts are predicting that the market for non-Apple tablets is likely to grow by that percentage as more and more consumers take advantage of cheaper tablets. Many of the cheaper alternatives run on Google’s Android OS that is becoming an even bigger player in the tablet market of late.
A market watcher told Digitimes.com, “With Google set to launch its new Android operating system codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich by the end of 2011, while demand for iPad is approaching saturating, shipments of Android-based tablet PCs are expected to increase from 19-20 million units in 2011 to 44-45 million units in 2012, while Apple’s iPad shipments will increase from 14-15 million units in 2010, to 35-36 million units in 2011, and to 54-55 million units in 2012.”
You can hear Apple scouring their patent filing cabinets as we speak for something to come back against Android with to halt their progress. The major processor suppliers – Nvidia, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm – launching faster chips around the turn of the year, will also fuel the growth in the tablet market.
The same analyst said, “Tegra 3 will support quad-core and provide five-times the 3D graphic processing capability of Tegra 2, while resolution support will increase up to 2560 by 1600.”
Mobile gambling industry companies will be licking their lips at these latest developments. It also looks possible that eventually tablets will take over from the trusty old laptop PC. They’ve still got a way to go yet though.
