Did the Macbook Air upgrade just kill the Macbook?

Macbook Air or Macbook Pro?Did the newly upgraded Macbook Air just officially kill the Macbook? MG Seigler from Tech Crunch seems to think so.

Granted, the Macbook Air just got a serious upgrade with a new Thunderbolt port, new Intel Core i5 chips, and a backlit keyboard. The new systems will also be able to run the newly launched OS X Lion operating system.

The Macbook Air was good before, but now it’s even better. But is it so good that the Macbook is now obsolete? As Seigler writes “I’ve had the chance to use one of the new systems for the past few days, and it screams. Even the people who thought I was crazy last year to replace my MacBook Pro with the Air may have second thoughts now. Apple is saying the updated devices offer roughly twice the performance of their predecessors in various regular use cases.”

But for those of us who were accustomed to the power of the Macbook, what’s in store for us? Well, additionally, Seigler adds, “I recognize that some people do need more power. That’s why Apple still makes the MacBook Pro. But for everyone else, the Air is now the entry-level notebook from Apple. It began outselling the MacBook almost immediately, so this move just made sense. Apple will still sell older MacBooks to K-12 institutions, I’m told. But consumers will no longer be able to buy it.”

Where do you stand? MacBook Pro or the newly revamped MacBook Air?

The Macbook Air is better for light tasks, such as Internet browsing and watching videos. It’s battery will only last 5-7 hours. The Air is more of a coffee shop machine. The Macbook Pro is more of a heavy- duty computer. It’s battery lasts for 10 hours (or at least mine does!) The Pro’s good for video editing, video games, and all the things an Air can do. I would recommend the Pro for Students because of it’s long battery life and its video gaming without taking up too much battery life. The Air is for constant travelers who need its lightness. The Pro is a better machine all together.
