BlackBerry is not cool enough anymore

BlackBerry smartphone unhappyIf first is everything and second is nothing then what is third? That’s what Research in Motion (RIM) will be wondering as BlackBerry slips into the tertiary position in the smart phone market. It’s significant as the company once held 55% of the market and was a major player. Think of it like a sports team not investing in new stars and beginning that slippery slope.

That’s how RIM feels after comScore revealed the company now owns less than a quarter of the market. The 24.7% they achieved in May was behind the Apple iOS (26.6%) and trailed Google’s Android that has a huge 38.1%. To think people cussed that little green monster originally. Now who’s cussing?!

RIM will be alarmed at the amount the company’s share has dropped. Compared with February, when they were number two behind Google, their share dropped 4.2% in three months. It’s the latest bad news for the firm that saw a poor set of results for June. That included a 20% drop in market value and it was despite the success of the new PlayBook in North America.

Unfortunately, it comes down to RIM’s failings in the two areas that are vital to the success of smartphone devices. The fact that their app store is relatively small, support is very poor and their apps are often a lot more costly than versions available to Android and iPhone users is one thing. Then there’s also the reality that in terms of looks their phones can’t compete with the high-end devices on offer for Android and Apple iOS customers. Until they can create a good looking device and sort out their app store, its only going to get worse for RIM.

The reason why Blackberry went on top of the list is because it was the cheapest. Common folks who wanted to own a mobile internet phone can easily afford to buy such. As time goes by, people had gotten used to it and they are now looking for more quality and features. And so they shifted to other brands, aside from the fact the the other brands have lowered their prices too.
