Google's Android mascotGoogle’s Android OS is currently accounting for almost half of all smart phone sales in the UK. According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech the Google powered operating system is making gains that will have Apple, BlackBerry and others clambering to see what they’re doing so well. The OS saw a staggering 35.1% worth of growth over the past year as the system saw its share of the UK market reach 44.9%. Some of this may be a result of the rapidly declining fortunes that Nokia is experiencing. The Finnish firm saw Symbian’s share drop from 21.4% three months ago to just 10.6% now.

On the subject of Nokia’s fortunes, Dominic Sunnebo, Global Consumer Insight Director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said, “There is no denying that Nokia has lost a significant amount of customers over the last 12 months, however, many of the remaining customers appear to be far more loyal to the brand, trading up to Nokia Smartphones from Nokia non-Smartphones. Nokia is failing to attract new buyers to the brand, however, it retains an existing, dedicated customer-base to sell the new Windows based Smartphones to later this year.”

Android now has the most popular operating system in large parts of the world including UK, Germany, France, US, Australia and Japan. Even considering this Apple’s iPhone is still the one that everyone wants to develop apps for. It may change if Android is able to sustain the market share. Apple is still the money making holy grail that many mobile gaming firms look at without a moment of hesitation.
