A few days ago Apple announced they would be releasing their newest software iOS 5 this fall. Okay, I just geeked out and had a geekgasm. The people over at Apple said they’re taking the iOS to “a whole new level”.
The first iPhone was already a work of art and the iOS is the best mobile platform on the market. Although I must admit the iPhone and IOS does have its flaws such as its poor notifications system, its lack of a physical shutter button and the lack of native messaging service.
Lo and behold, our prayers (and complaints) are answered with this IOS release.
Apple is promising more than 200 new features for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. I won’t list all 200 here but I will list the top five things that will make users ecstatic with the new iOS 5.
Notifications
Don’t you hate it when you’re in the middle of playing Angry Birds, you’ve been at it for hours and then you receive a text, the screen freezes while it shows your message and you lose all your momentum?
In Apple iOS 5, there’s the Notification Center and it not only includes app and message notifications but mini-widgets that show live information from apps like Weather and apps.
The notifications extend to the lock screen as well, so you can see more stuff right away without unlocking your phone. Sliding your finger on it will automatically lead you to the app that generated that notification.
Now you can enjoy those YouPorn…err Angry Birds sessions without interruptions.
Twitter integration everywhere
iOS 5 will have Twitter integration everywhere. Apps like camera will be able to directly post the image to Twitter. The YouTube App, Safari and even Maps will support direct sharing in Twitter. It also adds a new Twitter address field to your Contacts application.
Let’s just make sure we watch what pictures we tweet out.
A New Camera App
The new Camera app gets two of the most-requested features in the history of iOS. The first is a shortcut in the lock screen to access the camera right away, so you don’t have to unlock and then click on the Camera icon.
The other one is using one of the volume button as the shutter button. Just press + to snap your picture.
New Reminders app
Reminders are another self-descriptive feature. This one’s intelligent enough to remind you to do things based on your location. It’ll synchronize across devices and with your calendar.
iMessage
It’s a messaging service exclusively for iOS users. Kinda, sorta like Blackberry’s BBM service. You’ll be able to send messages, photos, videos, and contacts. Group messaging will also be available. It works over either WiFi or 3G and looks to be making good use of Apple’s new push notifications.
I have to admit, there came a time when I fell out of love with Apple because Android had filled the gaps that were missing. But all of that changed. Apple not only made significant, new innovations with this iOS 5 release, it also added the best of everything else that’s out there.
Now I just wish they could develop a “standing in line in front of the Apple Store” app.
