It may have only seemed like yesterday that Samsung released the latest edition of the sPhone. Another one is in the pipeline to hit the market early next year after the previous incarnation was reported to have reached sales of one million in one part of the world. Apple isn’t going to be best pleased!
According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung president J.K. Shin said that the company is aiming to release the Galaxy S III early next year in order to try and grapple more sales away from Apple. The device will run on Google’s Android operating system.
The sales update was for South Korea where the Galaxy S II achieved one million in its first month of sales. To put that into perspective, it’s the fastest selling smart phone ever in the country and it took their first Galaxy S handset 70 days to sell the same amount. No wonder Apple’s getting worried.
There was also news on the lawsuit that Apple took out on Samsung, with Shin commenting, “We didn’t copy Apple’s design. We have used many similar designs over the past years and it Apple’s allegation will not be legally problematic.”
Tablets will also be at the heart of Samsung’s plans in the near future. Shin explained that 4G versions of the new Galaxy Tabs will be out later on in 2011, stating that, “The 4G race has already begun. All carriers are coping with high data traffic with the availability of tablets and without 4G service, it will become increasingly difficult to cope.”
Thanks to Samsung’s track record of making reliable portable devices, this will all be good news to those in the mobile gaming industry and mean that Android may see more growth in the coming months.
