Get Satisfied With Culture

body artWhat is the secret to living a fully satisfied life? The simple answer for most men is a good job, plenty of sex, sports , alcohol and a full stomach, but research suggests there’s something more.

Researchers led by Koenraad Cuypers of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology analysed information culled from 50,797 adults living in Norway’s Nord-Trondelag County and discovered some very intriguing findings regarding perceived satisfaction in both male and females.

According to the study, published in the British Medical Association’s Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, people who go to museums and concerts or create art or play an instrument are more satisfied with their lives, regardless of how educated or rich they are.

It’s actually not that hard to believe. It’s always been said that money can’t buy you happiness. And there are rich, educated people who aren’t happy or satisfied just like there are poor, uneducated people who are unhappy and unsatisfied.

Obviously, the reverse is also true and that’s nothing new. Anyone who has travelled to a developing country can attest to seeing instances of both. There are those with little to no education, surviving on the bare necessities, yet they live satisfied, happy lives. So it’s not surprising that wealth and education weren’t contributing factors.

But the interesting part about this study is that finding that the link between culture and feeling good about oneself is not quite the same in both sexes. According to the study, for men, passive activities such as taking in a concert or museum exhibition are associated with an upbeat mood and better health. You can probably add attending a gaming industry party to that list.

During the study, the participants were asked detailed questions about their leisure habits and how they perceived their own state of health, satisfaction with life and levels of depression and anxiety. The responses indicated a strong correlation between cultural activities and happiness, however, men felt better when they were spectators while women clearly preferred doing rather than watching.

That’s not shocking. Men like to watch.

The study showed that for women it’s more hands on, they were less likely to feel anxious, depressed or feel unwell if they played music or created art.

Keep that in mind gentlemen, cooking, cleaning and folding laundry doesn’t count as created art. Take your lady out, get some culture, she’ll be happier and maybe she’ll let you let you watch.
