Lotteries dominate US sin tax

lotteryAfter reading the list published by 24/7 Wall St of “The Ten States That Profit Most From Sin” it wasn’t surprising to see Nevada at the top of the list, that’s a state built on gambling. But it was alarming to note how many of the ten states listed profited the most from their lotteries as opposed to traditional gambling or tobacco.

24/7 Wall St calculated the taxes and revenue each state makes from gambling, alcohol, tobacco and lotteries and compared the receipts against the total revenue for the state.

The result was that four out of the top ten states including: (10) New Jersey, (5) South Dakota, (3) Delaware and (2) Rhode Island profited most from lotteries, while the other six states were split between gambling and tobacco.

I find it alarming simply because those states are making such a killing off lotteries, the games that offer the worst type of odds for winning. It’s even more sad that New Jersey is making more money from its lottery than it is from the casinos.

At least with gambling, your chances of winning are respectable and most casinos will even offer you free drinks, unless their cutting back. With the lottery, it’s a lot of hope and not that much bang for your buck in my opinion. But hey, I guess hope sells.

When you look at the numbers being pulled in by the ten states with their sin tax, it’s easy to see why Black Friday happened. Online gambling numbers dwarf many of those and there’s no tax being collected on it.

It’s too damn costly to sin in the states anyways. That’s why the industry is heading to Dublin for the iGaming Super Show and a party where you can sin and not get hit with a tax for it.

The CalvinAyre.com Seven Deadly Sins Party is just a week away and the only tax you’ll have to pay for your indulgence at the party is the killer hang-over you’ll have from the open bar the next morning. But don’t worry, click here to find out ways to get around that too!
