Reports are suggesting that the next incarnation of Apple’s iPhone won’t be a massive change from the current iPhone 4. Those hoping for a device that could do your day job, walk the dog and give the wife what she wants whilst you watch the football with the lads will be sorely disappointed.
Peter Misek from analysts Jefferies & Co wrote in a research note on Forbes.com, “According to our industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support.”
He added that “industry checks indicate Apple will likely announce Sprint, T-Mobile, and China Mobile as new carriers.”
The fact that China Mobile seems to be confirmed as one of the new carriers will be news for anyone in the mobile space. As far as the mobile gaming sector is concerned it’s a big step that Chinese customers will be able to get hold of an iPhone. It means that if and when gaming law is relaxed China will already have the iPhone available for app developers.
On the flip side, nothing has been reported as to whether the new iPhone will feature any type of Near Field Communication (NFC). This is something that might revolutionize the way that payments are taken in the online gaming industry and make the whole process a lot easier. That’s obviously if the networks ever allowed it.
NFC is one feature where Apple may again lose out somewhat compared with some Android phones that are already offering functionality in this department. The iPhone will still be a very sought after device but in terms of market share, Apple is likely to continue falling behind Android.
