Less than a week ago, Bodog Brand founder Calvin Ayre announced the sponsorship of Scottish side Ayr United. Calvin made it clear that the sponsorship wasn’t all about just handing over a cheque and that there real intent was to back the team. Calvin even mentioned that he was planning to visit Scotland where he could personally “raise a glass to The Honest Men.”
You see it in professional sports all the time, when that kind of support is coming from the top, it really resonates with the players and fans. Don’t get it twisted, Calvin doesn’t own the team personally, but he’s being welcomed the same way the Dallas Mavericks would welcome their beloved Marc Cuban!
In fact, they sang the following lyrics at their last home game to the tune of “Land of Hope and Glory.”
We hate Ladbrokes and Coral
We hate William Hill too
We hate Paddy Power
But Bodog, we love you!
They sure are a passionate bunch over there. Aside from the obvious affiliation with the clubs name and colors, one of main reasons for the sponsorship was that Ayr United is a very exciting club, and this was an example of that passion. Personally, it could have used a better hook, but I like the remix.
Ayr United still has a chance to be promoted this season and while their “spirits” are certain to be lifted off the field, it will be interesting to see how the new energy and spirit this sponsorship has injected into the club translates on the pitch.
