The world’s most lucrative fruit, Apple, released its quarterly update today and iPad sales were the only minor disappointment. In terms of the figures, quarterly earnings were up by 95% to $6bn (£3.65bn) compared with the same quarter in 2010. Revenue was also up 83% to $24.7bn.
Gloss was taken off these figures down to the fact that it’s that dodgy post-Christmas period when consumers haven’t really recovered from the hammer-blow that Santa brings. This is why iPad sales stuttered to a mere 4.7m although there could be a plethora of reasons why this is the case.
There are currently competitors joining the market by the day offering alternatives to the iPad that are in some cases a deal cheaper and offer different features, such as Flash. Don’t get me wrong; the iPad is a unique product. It’s just you feel that among phones the iPhone is a lot more standout than the iPad will be in the tablet market.
Sales stuttering could also be why they’re suing Samsung for copying them and you have to take into account that the figures don’t include the impact of the recently launched iPad 2.
iPhone sales didn’t suffer from the same ignominy that the iPad did. Rapid sales in the US meant that the iPhone generated $12.3bn in revenue, up 126% on the year before. It comes ahead of the expected launch of the iPhone 5 in around six months time.
With global smart phone shipments expected to reach $650m by 2016 it’s hard to see where Apple is likely to put a significant foot wrong. Consumers are still attracted by the fact that Apple can offer a better operating system in the tablet market. Their real problems will come when Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb comes into its own. Could Apple sue over the name linking to a food product?
