Tablet sales set to quadruple this year

Tablet PC sales upNo strangers to releasing a report or ten, Gartner Inc. has given an indication of the effect tablets are having on the PC market. Sales of tablets, such as Apple’s iPad, are set to more than quadruple from 15m worldwide in 2010 to 70m in 2011, something that will have the PC market quaking in its outdated boots.

The iPad is set to remain the leader in this area with the research firm forecasting that after selling four times as many units this year it will control around 69% of the market in 2011. This is likely to fall to around 47% over the next four years as Android starts to chip away at Apple’s forbidden fruit like it has done in the smart phone market.

The analyst that led the forecast, Carolina Milanesi, said, “I think a lot of the tablet sales will be additive, not just subtracting from PC sales. But we do see some displacement on the mobile PC side, definitely for mini-notebooks and low-end laptops. It will probably lengthen the replacement cycle for the PCs that are out there.”

In terms of the main challenger to the iPad’s throne, Motorola’s Xoom tablet is the one to watch. Running the Android 3.0 or “Honeycomb” operating system it could be the jewel in Google’s crown but the fact it’s not even available in the UK currently could hit the firm hard. With the tablet computer market expected to reach 108m in 2012 Android would do well to get the Xoom out as soon as possible and watch it erode Apple’s somewhat fragile share of this market that is still fairly infant.

YUP, tablet PC's & MACS are a technological breakthrough. We have computing tablets before but none of them caught the attention of many, just now.
