We’d expect the Catholic Church to be against strippers but now it seems they are coming down on stripper names. The Catholic Church is always looking for something to complain about and it’s usually all of the fun stuff we hold dear. Drinkin, Gamblin, and especially Carryin’ On are all frowned upon by the by the man with the biggest hat in church.
Pope Benedict in his mass this Sunday railed against the rise in celebrity inspired baby names and has called for a return of traditional names. During his Mass Pope Benedict said, “Every baptized child acquires the character of the son of God, beginning with their Christian name, an unmistakable sign that the Holy Spirit causes man to be born anew in the womb of the Church.”
Names made popular in Hollywood and used by adult entertainers around the world such as Crystal, Destiny are no longer acceptable in the pontiff’s eyes. If you think you’re being clever by naming your baby after a celebrity, cars or booze, it’s not going to be a positive in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Names like Brandy, Tequila, Mercedes, or Ford F-150 don’t appear in the biblical texts either. But really do we want to listen to the Pope on matters of Children?
In the UK, in a surprising turn, the top boys name is Mohammed in all its variations of the spelling, knocked off Jack as Britain’s top baby name for boys in 2010.
In Italy, parents still choose to use the names of Saints for their children, Francesco and Guilia are still the top baby names in the country. In Italy, even if you wanted to name your child something unacceptable in the eyes of the authorities, the chances of you making it official are slim.
In 2008, the top court said it would be ridiculous for a couple to name their child, Venerdi (Friday) as it would expose them to mockery of their classmates. I can understand not naming your child Monday because really, nobody like Monday but Friday, he’d be the most popular kid in class, everybody loves Friday.
