nc-man-prays-for-snowIf you work in the gambling business in the UK it’s highly likely that the only bets that have been pouring in recently have been specials concerning whether or not it will snow on Christmas Day. It might cause havoc for the rest of the world, but the gaming industry seems to be enjoying it.

When you talk about crazy gambles one man from the United States wins the award easily though.

Alan Perry from Asheville, North Carolina, has put it all on the line after offering refunds during a certain period on items from his shop if it snows on Christmas Day. Perry’s Emporium will offer refunds on any items bought during the promotional period, which ran from November 26 to December 11. It all means that the shop could stand to lose around $500,000 in free jewellery.

Perry wasn’t going to let people have free jewels just if it snows though. Oh no! The NC resident set up an account with an insurance firm under which he will be a winner if it ends up snowing.

How so? Well, by setting up the account he gives a cut of everything sold during the promotional period to the insurers, and if it snows the insurance company pays the customers the money.

“They’re gambling that it’s not going to snow and they get to keep their money, I’m gambling that it is going to snow and I get all their money,” Perry told WECT6 News.

With only a 3% chance that there will actually be snow on Christmas Day, it might be slightly churlish of Perry to be so confident. Given the forecasts say there could be snow, Asheville, NC may well be celebrating.
