el-gordo-winner-revealedIt’s no secret that Spain is suffering as much as every country thanks to the recession, but the gambling business scatters out a lot of cheer every Christmas – €2,320 billion worth of cheer to be exact.

As other countries offer players prize funds that stretch into the millions, Spain are still the leading country when it comes to the annual lottery draw, which this year especially will help revitalize anyone that gets a part of the purse.

“El Gordo,” which translates to “The Fat One,” works by publishing a number, in this case 79250, which is printed on a number of tickets (1950), and this year the amount won by each of those lucky people was €300,000.

Despite the recession, ticket sales only dropped by 0.26% this year, with €2,695 billion being made off the €20 tickets. The day of the draw sees the country come to a complete standstill, akin to the celebrations when Spain was victorious in this summer’s World Cup. Incidentally, the combination of numbers that make up the date of the World Cup win, 11710, were among the most popular, along with the date of Pope Benedict’s visit to the country – 61110 and 71110.
