I’m more interested in what WikiLeaks DOESN’T tell us about Berlusconi

wikileaks-silvio-berlusconiItalian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was one of the world leaders given an unflattering portrait by US officials in the recent WikiLeaks release of State Department cables. In the diplomatic communiqués, Berlusconi is described as “feckless, vain and ineffective as a modern European leader.”

However, when it comes to burning the candle at both ends, the 74-year-old Berlusconi is described as extremely effective, even if his love of “partying hard” means “he does not get sufficient rest.” In response to the revelations, Berlusconi did what he usually does. He laughed it off. “Unfortunately, I have never in my life taken part in any ‘wild party’. They may be interesting.”

What I find interesting is that Berlusconi has the ability to laugh off these kinds of slurs. I also can’t get over the fact that the guy is 74 years old and still partying well into the night, often in the company of nubile women 1/3 his age (or younger). Seriously, rather than being vilified, the man should be celebrated for giving hope to us all.

Despite his love of night time escapades, Berlusconi has managed to amass a fortune estimated at around $9b, putting him in the top 75 of the world’s wealthiest individuals. He’s also Italy’s second-longest serving Prime Minister. Clearly, the guy seems to have struck some kind of ‘work hard/play hard’ balance that works for him, so where do his critics get off attacking him over this? Are these diplomatic middle managers just jealous because they once tried Silvio’s approach and failed miserably? Is it all a case of sour grappa?

Seriously, Silvio should be studied by some geneticist in the hopes of isolating some kind of ‘work hard/play hard’ gene. Or perhaps he’s just good at it because he never stops practicing. Come to think of it, I’ve had a lot of practice at perfecting this balancing act myself – I even got a chance to do a little apprenticeship with Silvio and his buddy Vladmir Putin in St. Petersburg a few years ago. Hmmm… Perhaps I should run for public office in one of my adopted homes around the globe. I’ll have to ponder this some more when that twenty-something actress/model/dancer returns with my fresh margarita…
