Spanish searches for World Siesta Champion

Probably the most farcical collection of athletic and sporting events has just come to an end in Delhi where, if reports are to be believed, it turned into a weird amalgamation of Delhi belly and safe sex. Very odd, right? Aside from this though, perhaps one of the more ludicrous of events in the world of competitiveness is taking place in Spain. Winning the World Cup in the summer has obviously given the Iberian peninsular quite the “lets make a contest about absolutely anything” bug, meaning the Spanish Siesta Championship got underway yesterday in the nation’s capital Madrid.

The aim of the contest is to sleep for the longest, the surroundings being the hustle and bustle of a shopping mall. The competition format consisted of groups of five given 20 minutes to attempt to fall asleep on a blue sofa, timed by a doctor who had a pulse rate monitor to tell how long they’d been asleep for. You were rewarded with extra points for snoring, adopting weird sleeping positions, or if you donned ridiculous nightwear. Remember all this was in full view of shoppers in the Madrid.

The winner of the contest is the person with the most points accumulated, wins €1,000, and think of the bragging rights to your friends when you win this little number. As for Spain, they’re currently laying down the plans for the annual iPhone smashing contest – just because they can!
